Knowing Your Child: 3 Suggestions for a Better Relationship!

Is Too Much of Your Relationship Nagging versus Enjoying and Working Well together?

We still have a few openings for mid-winter camp. Call us ASAP (212) 245-0444 and we’ll help you get registered. If a class is full, you'll be put on a waiting list. The waiting list does move, so don't hesitate.

At various times raising my son, I felt I spent too much time nudging, pushing, bugging my son to do things like chores, homework, teeth brushing, versus enjoying each other and having a healthy nurturing relationship. Here are some tips, if you find yourself falling into this trap.

  1. Time Out Together: Your Child Picks What you Do! Schedule regular one-on-one time with one of your children. Having time individually with one parent can be a rare thing in a family. Often we're together as a pack, but for some children, they get lost in this and the individual time can be special and very nurturing. Perhaps once a week or once a month schedule an outing that is their choice. Some can be small, like going out for ice cream or a dog walk together. Some can be big, such as an overnight stay or perhaps to a place they love (Great Wolf Lodge, a hike, LEGOLAND NY). Schedule it and keep it going. You'll both cherish and look forward to this time once it becomes a routine.

  2. Time Out Together: You Pick What you Do! You might get lots of objections, but try it! Pick carefully something you think they'll like, but something that is important to you. This is a nice way for your child to see your passions. I'd suggest every 4 or 5 times you pick an activity.

  3. Start a Book, Movie, or Graphic Novel Club for Kids and Parents. Make it easy and uninvolved. Pick a few friends. Each month, have a different selection made by a different child or adult. Get together by zoom or have a potluck once the world opens up. Spend a half-hour discussing the selection. Keep it short and fun. Maybe combine with time in the park, or end with a board game. Our kids benefit from talking, thinking, and hearing other people's opinions and ideas.
