Are Science and Art Polar Opposites?
What does art and science have in common?
On Thursday afternoon, I watched a presentation about women scientists in STEAM, from the Athena Film Festival, happening this weekend! The presentation addressed thinking about both science and art. Here are some great takeaways for you.
Art and science have a lot in common Often we think these fields are different ends of a spectrum. But what we forget, is that the skills that make excellent scientists or artists are often the same. Curiosity, teamwork, communication, collaboration are key skills for scientists, filmmakers, dancers, and other types of artists. At Robofun, we stress these skills and work to help your children understand some of the commonalities.
To be a great scientist, you need to be good at telling and visualizing stories. I think of Dr. Richard Feynman, in 1986, telling congress and the American public why NASA's Challenger exploded. He showed us in about a minute using a clamp, an O-ring, and a glass of ice water. Telling and visualizing stories is crucial for us to understand science. We need to help our kids become both comfortable in science and in art and to understand how the two fields are much closer together than we may have thought.
Enjoy the rest of this beautiful day. Can you find a connection between art and science? Can you share this with your child? Or can you challenge your child to find one and share with you?
