Learning Challenges, Life Challenges, Raising Resilient Kids

How to Challenge yet not Frustrate your Child!

One of our big goals with kids is to challenge them. But how do you determine how hard, how solvable is appropriate to encourage growth and learning. Here are some pointers.

  1. How hard should it be? Most of the time a challenge should have an attainable solution. However learning to loose or fail gracefully is an important skill that comes with practice and children really need to practice this.

  2. Who decides the challenge? Are you letting your child set up a challenge? Can you scaffold and support it to help him or her work towards achieving reasonable goal?

  3. Can you introduce a challenge that has no solution (yet...)? Yes, but with caveats that will help your child manage expectations. It can be approached as a mystery, without expectation of solving it.

  4. Do your kids see you attempt something too difficult? Not everything is easy, or doable, and some things help us grow, but we can't crack them. Modeling an even keel will help your child have an example to draw upon.

Registration is open for our fall after-school classes! We address, hard, solvable and sometimes not so solvable challenges with our classes. We work collaboratively, creatively and with joy and playfulness. Please see the buttons below. Each button is organized by the age of your child. All classes are at 4:30 pm unless indicated.

Click on the buttons to register, call us at (212) 245-0444, or email us. We're happy to help you select the best option for your child. Fall semester begins on September 19th and goes until the week of November 21st.
