Do Our Kids Learn During Downtime?
FOMO, Learning, and Enjoying our Lives!
As many of you reading this are New Yorkers, I can safely say we are very good at over-scheduling ourselves and our kids. Is there a downside to this? FOMO can keep us running around, and keep us from intentional and mindful experiences. A few things I've learned about how children (and adults!) benefit from slowing down.
We become more observant and engaged at the moment.
When time slows down, we listen to each other more directly and more fully.
Slowing down helps us to feel more gratitude, and appreciate our families and our lives.
It is ironic to me that by doing less, we appreciate life more fully! These last few weeks of August are a good time to experiment with this. Please let me know how it goes. I love hearing your response to my blog!
My Hart to Heart this week will be Friday, August 19th at 11:30 AM EST and we'll be discussing Teaching AI (artificial intelligence) to children. My speaker is Tim Cooper who resides in Toronto and teaches students from 5th - 12th grade at The York School. For over 20 years, Tim has taught computer science, design, and English. His educational mindset is student-centered, growth-oriented, and influenced by current ideas in maker education, project-based learning, constructivism, whole student development, and learner-centered design. Tim is a founder of MakerTO, a group of educators who create great materials and share them with other educators. He is also one of five authors of the new International Baccalaureate DP Computer Science curriculum.
