3 Benefits of Coding Classes for Kids

Coding helps kids learn about trial and error in a fun way. Creating a program (or steps of code) requires trying things over and over again. When what you try doesn't work (90% of the time a computer program will not work the first or second time..) this doesn't mean failure, it just means you're on your way, but need to think carefully and clearly about what occurred versus what your intention is. Learning to think carefully, edit, and make changes is great practice for many other parts of life.
Coding helps children understand that large projects get made by breaking them up into parts, making each part work, and combining the parts. Most goals in life are solved by breaking down the goal and developing individual parts. How do we get experience doing this? Coding is a great place to practice.
Kids become more motivated learners. In Dan Pink's book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, the author tells us that autonomy, purpose, and mastery are crucial to creating driven and motivated learners. Coding your own project gives your child an incredible opportunity to learn with autonomy, purpose and a goal to master. This helps them develop drive and motivation.
