Do We Learn Through Puzzles?

Python, Puzzles, and MoMath!

Earlier this week I attended my first in person conference since COVID-19 began. I was at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) conference called Mathematics of Various Entertaining Subjects (MOVES) Conference 2022.The conference is open to everyone from kids to adults with an interest in patterning, puzzles, and visual and intriguing aspects of math that are accessible to us all.

One of the thrilling moments for me was running into a Robofun family at the conference! Our ten year old Robofun student consistently asked some of the best questions at each session.

If you are looking for FREE fun ways to grow your child's love of puzzles, this Friday night at MOMA (and online), my colleague Dr. Lauren Rose, is running a Domino Circles event. I'll be there! Come play and learn.

Two delightful quotes from a master puzzle maker, Scott Kim's presentation:

"Puzzles are the literature of mathematics. Playing and making puzzles should play the same role in math class that reading and writing stories play in English class."

"Puzzles are like songs. A good puzzle can give you all the pleasure of being duped that a mysery story can. It has surface innocence, surprise, the revelation of a concealed meaning, and the catharsis of solution." Stephen Sondheim

What goes on in our Python classes? This Thursday at 12:30 pm I have the pleasure of interviewing our Python teacher, Lianne Remen. Lianne has been teaching Python, scratch coding, robotics, and animation classes for the past three years. Lianne is an amazing teacher! She has taught for us while getting her MPA from the Columbia University School of International Affairs with an MPA in Urban and Social Policy. We will learn more about her experience teaching children as well as her experience as an anti-poverty policy analyst.
